VORTEX OF CREATION?

Life on the lake is at its best right now, at least for me as I like the warm weather. I can tell the days are getting shorter because the two ladies who used to swim in the lake at 5am are now starting at 6am. This morning, another woman joined them with her (I don’t know what to call it) half of a surfing board which she propels by kicking her feet. They were only out in the lake a half hour which is short for them. When I opened my shades, I realized it was only 50 degrees so that may have been why. I so admire their tenacity and habitual practice of swimming so early in the morning. I know I would like to go out in my kayak as the water is so still at that time but my body says NO, wait until it is warmer out. Of course, living right here and being retired, I can pick and choose the time I wish to kayak although the wind determines when I do. If it is windy, I do not venture out onto the water.

The weatherman is predicting hot weather ahead, perhaps a heat wave. Do you know we have not had a heat wave yet although we are in August? In case you did know what a heat wave is, it is three consecutive days of 90 degrees or higher. I had been wondering if we were going to have a summer at all because it felt like Fall but now the heat is coming back. For those of you, who do not like the heat, just know that it will be only for a short time and for those of you, who like the heat like me, enjoy every day you can go barefoot and enjoy wearing fewer clothes. I still am wearing sweat pants and a sweater in the morning and I do not have air conditioning. I have to confess that the temperature here is at least 5 degrees cooler because of the lake.

As I was sitting and immersing myself in the view of the calm water, the mirror like texture only occasionally being disturbed by fish jumping up and out of the water to catch the bugs that are close to them, I came to a deep realization. Water is the source of all life as humans, animals and vegetation could not live without water. It truly is a symbiotic relationship as each part of nature nurtures the other. The beautiful tree in my yard that is haven to all the birds including the hummingbirds is dependent on the water for its life. We are also dependent on the tree to convert our carbon dioxide into oxygen which we all need to live. The other plants and animals also need clean air to live. It is a circle, a cycle of life. I have known this for years but this morning I was made even more aware of how we truly are ONE as none of us could exist without the other: each of us doing exactly what we were created to do.

This year, the birds are behaving differently. In early spring, the golden finches were more abundant than usual and suddenly most of them left. I have more hummingbirds than usual and they are behaving differently. Usually only one hummingbird at a time is allowed at a feeder (I have three) but this year they are sharing the feeders even if they display wariness. It started with only two females allowing each other to be at the same feeder and then the male would allow the female to feed if only with apprehension. Is that a symbol of what humanity is on the verge of? These hummingbirds are displaying such aerial agility as they practice all of their skills. I have so many that I can just sit at the window and watch them as they do the acrobatics. I usually only have one seagull that is master of the lake but just last night there were six of them out there. This morning one seagull was in charge of the raft and two others were each on a buoy and one other one was flying between them all. There are changes afoot even if I don’t know what it all means. Last night, the news says we are in for a strong El Nino in about 3 months as it gathers its strength. I do not know what that has to do with the birds but if anyone knows, please let me know. I am curious.

Guess what I came across? A powerful meditation I had saved to share with you and it feels so appropriate for this moment.

8-8-8 MEANINGS & PURPOSE

Happy summer. I just got back from kayaking in my lake. It is a perfect day for it as the water is calmer and so are the winds. I do not kayak when it is windy or when there are a lot of speed boats or jet skis out there. I usually write my newsletter first and then go kayaking. Lately, by the time I have the time, the wind is up or the weekender people are out on the water. This morning even though I needed to make my yogurt first as it takes 10 hours to cook, when I was done the wind had still not come up so I “jumped” into my kayak for a journey around the lake. The water and the wind change depending on what end of the lake you are on. At one end, there are two coves that are as still as glass. So much so, that I can kayak through the clouds that are reflected on it. The other end of the lake usually has rougher waters and more wind. This morning I had the lake all to myself, not another boat to disrupt the peace of quiet or create waves. It is an adventure as well as a story book.

I cannot help but wonder about the people who were always using the lake when all of sudden, no boats are out at the docks and a few have not even put their docks out yet. There are more homes on the water for sale than I have ever seen before. Perhaps this is a sign of the economy. I know a few owners have passed away and it seems to be a long time before the legal system frees it up for anyone to buy. The beach right in front of my home is very quiet and perhaps when we are having a heat wave, more will come but mostly it is quiet. The ages of the children who used to play are now older and the young ones are not old enough to come alone and have to wait for an adult to bring them. Life on the lake is up and down just like life is. There are busy times and then there are quiet times. As the population ages, the scene changes again. I am ever so grateful to be here and able to partake in the gifts that being on the water bring.

This video gives you extra strength to cope with all the changes that are happening to you and your world. I do not usually watch many debates but I tuned in to the Republican Party debate last night. I had no idea that there were debates on at 5pm so I did not get to watch them. I wish I had because there was a woman who the channel said was definitely the winner of that first one. I have to confess that I watched only to be able to make up my own mind on Donald Trump and see what the others had to offer. Frankly, it was like watching young boys in a contest with some of them being downright rude to the others. It was obvious the ones that had dignity and were sure within themselves but the noise makers were the ones to get the most attention. I have watched debates before and each candidate was treated equally with the time. I guess being 10 candidates, the questions kept going to the same ones over and over again. It ended at 11pm but I could not relax enough to go to bed. I had to stay up another hour and a half just to be relaxed enough to go to sleep. The energy from that broadcast was filled with negativity although I know it was productive to see how each candidate handled himself. I like to make up my own mind by seeing it for myself as the news commentators sometime report a different aspect than what I get.

I want to leave you with a smile. Tom Cruise and Jimmy Fallon in sync battle is quite entertaining and will bring a smile to your face if not downright laughter. I am not up late enough in the evening to listen to the night shows but this one is great.

BLUE MOON AND 8-8-8 LION’S GATE

It is hard to believe physically that tomorrow is the first day of August. Why does summer go by so fast when the other seasons seem to last much longer? We did not have our 5 day heat wave which is OK with me as I sit here with my window open and the light dry breeze and the sun coming in to bathe me with its energy. Yet, the heat waves are what heats up the water in the lake so it feels like your bathing in the spring fed water. The beach is much quieter this year as fewer people come down to enjoy it. I know the young children who used to squeal with delight are now grown up in the later years of teen hood. We do have a few smaller children again but the parents are so busy that they don’t get to come as often as they would like. I am intent on enjoying each and every moment as life does change yet I can enjoy each cycle of life with gusto. When I was younger I used to wonder about the older people. What did they have to do and what did they do? The saying that retired people have: “I don’t know how I ever found the time to work?” is so very true. I am much more content to just sit and enjoy the breeze or the sun than I ever was before. It is also wonderful not to HAVE to do anything you don’t want to do.

My bus trip went to Ogunquit, Maine last week as a side trip. There was a trail alongside the ocean which I was hoping to go on with my scooter. The tour people told me that they were not sure I could go the whole mile with my scooter as there might be steps along the way. I decided I would try it anyway and it was so much fun. The beach and the ocean were below so we were up away from it but the view was great. There were a lot of benches along the way where people could stop and enjoy the scenery. I was so glad that I went as the only stairs that were there led down to the beach so I got to do the whole mile from beginning to end. It was also a great test for the scooter as it went up the elevated parts and down the other side with much ease. I just needed to remember to adjust the speed from turtle to rabbit or vice versa. There are no brakes as it automatically brakes when you take your finger off the forward or reverse levers. It made me feel like a young kid on a scooter and it made many people smile.

Summer is a great time to create memories and treat yourself to those that are waiting for you to enjoy.

I was surprised to hear that the 8-8-8 Lion’s Gateway began on 7/26/15. Isn’t that the day that the beloved black maned lion was killed? Coincidence? I don’t think so; it is actually bringing more attention to the Lion’s Gateway. Here is some info on this that you might find interesting.

I have had a soft spot for bees ever since they began having their crisis. One of my friends was a bee keeper and he would share some of his honey with me. Without bees to pollinate, our food source would severely suffer. They are invaluable to the human race and our survival. I was so happy to find this article that shows how they are doing.
