AHA MOMENTS

Our weather has been fluctuating between below freezing temperatures which created quite a few accidents last Monday night and Tuesday morning, to two days of rain, to today which is still below freezing but sunny. I have bird feeders which are primarily for smaller birds especially the Golden Finch. Last Tuesday morning I noticed an Eastern Towhee at the thistle bird feeder. That was quite unusual as they are ground feeders and are always under the feeders scrounging for food. Then I noticed this Towhee at the finch feeders every day, several times a day.

This morning as I was preparing my breakfast, there he was again at the feeder. I chuckled and thought: “you are different aren’t you? Your brothers and sisters are not following your lead but you are getting fed and they are not!” as the ground is covered by ice crusted snow. Suddenly as I was chuckling and enjoying this little black and white fluffy round ball of fur, I became aware of what I had said. A light went off in my head and I was aware of an AHA moment.

It is OK to be different, to march to the beat of a different drummer. I am unique and so are you. That is OK. We are being fed from a different source than we are familiar with. The Creator is guiding us to feed ourselves, our Spirits in a unique way. By you allowing yourself to be different, to be unique, to be YOU, a new model is being presented to the world. You are the prototype of a new species that is being fed by the Creator in a unique way and you will never be hungry for Love again. Love yourself enough to follow your heart and feed your Spirit in a different way. This little bird was happy with his full belly and he was happy being who he is. Be content with who you are and follow your own guidance.

I am sure that bird would enjoy having his fellow companions along for the feast. So would you. It is OK to want companionship and love from others. After all they are our family. Isn’t it great to belong to such a family that arrives when you need them most?

OPPORTUNITIES TO SMILE & REMEMBER

Here I sit, basking in the sun as I sit at my computer writing to you as I have my morning cup of coffee with cream. The windows on the side of my house that face the lake only let in the sun in the summer. All year long, the sun comes through my windows on the other side that faces my street so I have sun all winter long (when it is out) and I can even open my kitchen door and let the sun shine through the full glass storm door. I love the sun coming in and warming my home and giving me the opportunity to sun bathe.

The lake thawed out since my last newsletter until last night. We had the deepest frost and this morning the lake does not have ice at only the edge, the edge is the only place that is free flowing. Of course, you realize that it is still a thin film of ice, not frozen as it will be later in the year. I am chuckling now as I had watched the 22-24 geese out on the ice this morning. Some were just standing on the ice, some were being still in the water as their weight had cracked the ice (they could not get up because the ice kept cracking as they tried) so they were just sitting in that little puddle of free water. Some had made it up onto the lawn and were happily chomping down the grass. One was very still and quite far from the others. When I first moved here 19 years ago, I feared that the ducks were frozen in place as I watched this spectacle. Yet no duck ever really got stuck so I let that fear go as I just enjoy watching this yearly occasion that they take for granted. I finally saw one goose that was able to get up and out, then avoiding the other breakthroughs that were made, walk to the edge of the property without falling in and that far away one did the same. Then one that must have been quite determined not to use his/her wings to get out, just kept paddling, breaking the ice in front so it finally was able to reach shore.

Yesterday, I really got a treat as the 3 Hooded Mergansers stayed in front of my beach for quite a while. I love it when they do that as with my binoculars, I can really appreciate their beauty and colors close up. Then after they left, the other dabblers (divers) came. The pair of ring necked ducks came and spent quite a bit of time in front of my beach also. None of these spend that much time in front where I can really see all their details but this morning I realized that they had come to say goodbye to me. They knew with an animal’s knowing that the water would be more frozen today so they were leaving to continue their migrating journey to warmer waters.

I know the solstice is two weeks away but I wanted you to be aware of what an auspicious time this will be and the true meaning behind it.

MEMENTOS OF THANKSGIVING

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I am grateful for you, my reader. You give me the opportunity to share so much of myself, you help me to grow spiritually in all dimensions. My wish for you is to be thankful for yourself for without you, the world would be a very different place.

Yesterday as it was snowing, Mother Earth shared her creatures with me. The dabblers, the Hooded Merganser ducks came close to shore so I could see them even better with my binoculars. I have seen them a couple of times this fall but they are few in number, in fact only three have shown up. While I was enjoying their diving in and out of the lake, another duck appeared. One I have never seen before, a Wood Duck Drake, he was so beautiful. He was all alone and just swam by very slowly along the shore. Then, after I had done some cooking for Thanksgiving, I looked out and what a scene I was watching. There were 22 Canadian Geese standing upside down with their heads in the water and their butts in the air. That is something you see very seldom. As I watched this scenario, I noticed that there were smaller ducks that were diving in and out of the water. There were my 3 Hooded Mergansers and 2 other ones who turned out to be another favorite of mine, the Ring-necked Duck. This was the first time this year that they have appeared. These two types of ducks used to come every year with many more of their tribes but the last couple of years, they have been scarce. Then, a sea gull who I call Oscar was in the mix. I laughed as Oscar tried to grab the fish that the other smaller ducks were coming up with but they were too fast for him. They just dove under the water with their catch as he approached. I don’t think the geese were hunting for the small fish as I believe they only eat greens. I enjoyed watching them, pausing in my activities, as I know they don’t stay long. What a gift that was, a gift to be thankful for.

This morning I woke to a scraping sound and as I got to my door, the young men who do my snow removal were just leaving after clearing the snow from my stoop, my sidewalk and my driveway. I am all set to drive to my son’s house for Thanksgiving now. I am so grateful that it was done early so I would not have to be concerned about traveling on this snowy day.
