Beloved,
Whew, what a week and today might be the hottest day of the whole summer. Our country is in turmoil with all of the tragedies happening. Of course, I do not have to tell you that, there is no way any person alive would not know what is happening. I would like to share with you what I see happening the most through all of this. People are coming together in solidarity and especially love. There is so much love being generated and flowing to all humans on this planet. What do you choose to see? Love or hate? You do have the choice and by choosing LOVE you are not denying the reality of what is causing it. Humanity is waking up and the veils are being pulled off your eyes. I see the loss and the deep sadness being experienced yet I also see the love these people are receiving from the purity of the hearts around them and even across this planet. Unfortunately, media is always repeating the negative side of any event over and over again. I wish they would repeat the stories and views of all the love that is being given. It would change the fear that is being generated. Choose to focus on the positive, the awareness that is being created and the love that is flowing so freely.
Check out this photo and know that each of us can do something to show what we stand for. Not black or white but black and white, in fact, all colors. Be a rainbow..
I am always surprised when I see race bias because personally I do not feel it and cannot see it. I have always judged people for who they are and not for what color or race they are. I take no personal credit for that because it is what I always did without knowing the difference. I learned a valuable insight into discrimination when I was going to college and that was at the age of 50. Can you imagine going to college at 50 years of age and being with all the young ones? Boy, did I feel out of place and very ignorant about how to go about doing all of this. One of my classmates was a Trinidadian woman my age from New York. Her skin was black but I did not notice this as different. I was too busy feeling so out of place and soooo old.
This was an unusual offering by the Springfield College of a weekend college where once a month you went to college for two full days. Audra was staying at the YMCA while she was here at college. I had a lot of room so I offered her to stay at my home while she was at school. We became good friends and still are today. I had never had a black friend but never considered that it was unusual. Anyway, one day we were talking about racial bias and she insisted that it was still in place even if it was 1990. As much as I wanted to believe her, I just could not wrap my mind around it. After all, this was not the early 1900’s, this was 1991 when they had they finally had the right to vote and there were able to use all toilets and did not have to sit at the back of the bus or enter buildings from the back door. They were free and I just could not see any discrimination. She challenged me to go to a restaurant with her and told me to pick anyone I wanted.
I chose this restaurant and we went in. We were seated at the back of the restaurant where it was darker????? As were sitting there, no waitress came with a glass of water (that was when you automatically got a glass of water). After 15 minutes, a waitress appeared with a menu but still no water. 30 minutes later, she came back to take our order but practically ignored my friend and spent her time talking to me. Do you know, I do not know whether we stayed to eat or not but I remember wanting to leave that restaurant so bad. My dear friend had been treated like she did not exist and I did not want to stand for that. I was insulted for her but she insisted that was the way blacks are treated at white restaurants. Did you know there are black or white restaurants in the US? By the way, we both got our Bachelor’s degree at age 52 yet she went further in her schooling and now has a doctorate.
What an eye opener that was. I still shake my head that those things existed and I was totally unaware of it. I guess we do not feel discrimination unless it is directed at us specifically. I always felt that it was an individual that was rude, never attributing it to a race or color. I am considered lower middle class and yet I did not feel discrimation. That is why I understand why white people do not understand just how biased we really are. It does not happen to us. In fact, I went to Trinidad with my friend for Mardi Gras and the Trinidadians were so friendly towards me. It is time that all humans wake up to the fact that we are one species on one planet and we are all individuals with many different personalities not attributable to race. WE are just human and each very unique.
Let these videos be what you remember from all that has happened.
This is a song that we can sing to one another, to all of humanity. Be patient, it is slow at beginning but there is a beautiful song coming. Sing it to yourself and the world.
