I missed wishing you a Happy Halloween so HAPPY HALLOWEEN. I live on a small private street with only 3 year rounders’ and 3 summer homes. There are no children on the street so no one trick or treats here and there is no reason to buy candy for children who do not come.  It is amazing to me how completely the thought of Halloween did not come to mind.  I must have been in some kind of bubble.  Gee, if I know how to do that, why can’t I do that with situations that I don’t like?  Imagine being able to completely ignore anything or anyone who bugs you?

I just received an opportunity for us to all join in and make a difference on earth and in our future.  I don’t believe I have ever mentioned Maureen Moss in my newsletters but I have followed her for a long time.  I don’t know how to reduce or change the color of this email to a link for you to click on so I will just include the whole thing as it has too much information for me to try to do it justice.  Please join with me and all the other souls who want to make a difference in the world and their own lives.

Today must be a day for firsts.  I also follow this person on economy so I have a sense of what is happening on our planet, in our world. UNITY, PEACE AND INGENUITY

There is a light at the end of the tunnel…..and it is not a train.

I have two separate articles I would like to share with you that just remind me of the above saying.

The world is so charged up with anger, talk of war and also distrust in even themselves. Please check these out and KNOW that the LIGHT is here and shining bright. Our planet is small in comparison to all of the galaxies out there but it sure seems large when the media is so focused on politics and the economy that we are led to believe that all the countries on this planet are at odds.  Here is a  bright spot  and lets us think positive and see the whole planet agreeing to work TOGETHER in solving all the damage we have done to our home, our planet. It is possible and now there is proof that it is probable.

Our beliefs and our religions are finally respecting each other and agreeing to join together for the betterment of mankind which is you and me.

Praying for Creation

This September on the World Day of Prayer for Creation, Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew offered a moving joint statement:

The story of creation presents us with a panoramic view of the world. Scripture reveals that, “in the beginning,” God intended humanity to cooperate in the preservation and protection of the natural environment. . . . The earth was entrusted to us as a sublime gift and legacy, for which all of us share responsibility until, “in the end,” all things in heaven and on earth will be restored in Christ (Ephesians 1:10). Our human dignity and welfare are deeply connected to our care for the whole of creation.

However, “in the meantime,” the history of the world presents a very different context. It reveals a morally decaying scenario where our attitude and behavior towards creation obscures our calling as God’s co-operators. Our propensity to interrupt the world’s delicate and balanced ecosystems, our insatiable desire to manipulate and control the planet’s limited resources, and our greed for limitless profit in markets—all these have alienated us from the original purpose of creation. We no longer respect nature as a shared gift; instead, we regard it as a private possession. . . .

The consequences of this alternative worldview are tragic and lasting. The human environment and the natural environment are deteriorating together, and this deterioration of the planet weighs upon the most vulnerable of its people. The impact of climate change affects, first and foremost, those who live in poverty in every corner of the globe. Our obligation to use the earth’s goods responsibly implies the recognition of and respect for all people and all living creatures. The urgent call and challenge to care for creation are an invitation for all of humanity to work toward sustainable and integral development.

[We] offer thanks to the loving Creator for the noble gift of creation and . . . pledge commitment to its care and preservation for the sake of future generations. After all, we know that we labor in vain if the Lord is not by our side (Psalms 126-127), if prayer is not at the center of our reflection and celebration. Indeed, an objective of our prayer is to change the way we perceive the world in order to change the way we relate to the world.

We urgently appeal to those in positions of social and economic, as well as political and cultural, responsibility to hear the cry of the earth and to attend to the needs of the marginalized, but above all to respond to the plea of millions and support the consensus of the world for the healing of our wounded creation. We are convinced that there can be no sincere and enduring resolution to the challenge of the ecological crisis and climate change unless the response is concerted and collective, unless the responsibility is shared and accountable, unless we give priority to solidarity and service. [1]

Here is an  explanation of what is happening in our world and in words that you can understand.

Finally, a small and clear solar panel.  I am so happy as I have been waiting for the panel size to reduce, there is so much more that can be done with it.  I know it is not in production yet but the possibilities are endless.  Imagine not having to have your whole roof covered with those large ones.  Perhaps now we can get our energy through our windows.  And….these small ones will take less room on our land.  Can you think of theinventions that will come from this?

We here in the Northeast have had a touch of what it must be like to have a hurricane bearing down on your part of the planet.  We have had so much rain and the wind has been very strong but today the sun is shining bright even if it is a little chilly.  I would like to thank all the medical people and even strangers who come to our aid when we so desperately need them.  This is just an example of their dedication.

CARIBBEAN RELIEF EFFORT – HELP US HELP THE BIRDS

Beloved,  I received this email yesterday and it brought to my attention something I had never v considered. You have been great at providing for the people and even the animals but who ever considered the birds.  They too need food to eat.  Our summer birds that delight us so like the hummingbirds are in trouble right now on all the areas of devastation from the numerous hurricanes. I am a little embarrassed as I feed the birds in my yard and get so much joy from watching them and yet it never dawned on me that they could be in trouble especially on the islands that have been devastated by the storms.

We just received the following information from our friends Derek & Jeannnette Lovitch at Freeport Wild Bird Supply. They are working with our seed company Lizzie Mae’s Bird Seed & Dry Goods and BIRDSCARIBBEAN to ship much needed supplies to help with the birds of the devastated Caribbean islands.  PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION BELOW.  

We all love our birds, and some of these islands are the winter homes of our beloved hummingbirds.

Dear fellow store owners,

I am working with BirdsCaribbean to organize an effort to get hummingbird and bird feeding products to the islands hardest hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. They will then be distributed to residents who are willing to aid native, and in some cases Endangered endemic birds, by offering supplemental food sources as the islands’ habitats slowly recover. Hummingbird feeders and birdseed for species such as grassquits, bullfinches, doves, and parrots (many of which are found nowhere else in the world, and some endemic to single, devastated islands) may be critical in providing food to desperate birds in the coming weeks, and perhaps on some islands, even years.

A conversation with a Birds Caribbean Board Member and friend led to the realization that we could assist in this effort. Like you, we’re a small mom-and-pop bird feeding supply store and there’s only so much we could personally do financially. However, the least I could offer was to make a few phone calls to see what I can rally.

My first call was to Lizzie Mae’s Bird Seed.  Lizzie Mae’s has packed an Island Relief blend and the product is on its’ way to Miami right now.  Upon arrival at the FEMA Warehouse the seed will be divided and sent to the different islands in need.  The seed will start being placed on rudimentary feeders upon arrival. Aspects, Inc, has also offered a generous donation of tube feeders and this will be part of the next phase of shipments. 

The next step in the process is where you guys come in. If you are able, we are asking you to donate anything you may be able to from the listing of these products (due to logistical concerns and sorting needs, we are keeping the list short at this time):

  • Dr. JB’s Hummingbird Feeders (Songbird Essentials) with 32oz, 48oz, or 80oz capacity).
  • Big Gulp 40oz hummingbird feeder (Classic Brands)
  • Best-1 32oz and 72oz hummingbird feeders (Best-1)
  • “Instant” sugar (especially helpful for areas without power or fuel), but ONLY 100% sucrose – nothing with any dyes, preservatives, additional additives, or pre-mixed solutions. This is especially important given the potential volume of nectar that these birds will consume on de-vegetated islands, as opposed to just the usual supplement offered from feeders).
  • Hummingbird feeder cleaning supplies, such as bottle brushes and port cleaners.
  • Platform feeders: post-mounted or hanging.
  • Tube feeders (might be especially important for areas with serious rat problems) that are easy to clean in wet, tropical environments and are long-lasting so we don’t add to the massive refuse problem, such as Aspects Quick-Clean line and Droll Yankees Onyx line.

We ask that you put anything available in a box marked Birds Caribbean and leave it out for the Lizzie Mae driver to take back to their warehouse. Think about it: Birds Caribbean has a goal of 2,000 hummingbird feeders and if we each donated just four feeders, they’re almost half way to that goal!

It’s been a tough year, from Harvey to Pacific fires to Irma and Maria. And I know you’re probably feeling “donated-out” like we are. But while we too have supported humanitarian efforts, here’s a chance for all of us to use our chosen line of work to focus on a specific, but critical effort to save some truly remarkable birds.
