HAPPY NEW YOU

Beloved,

Mother Nature is having fun playing with the ice fishermen. We have had extremely cold weather but the lake is freezing partly and then thawing partly. On Monday, the holiday of Christmas, I noticed that my neighbor was out on the ice. My heart went in my throat as I watched him walking on that ice and I knew from watching the lake that the ice was not that thick in the middle of the lake. I was going to call him and warn him or be prepared to call 911 if he went in when I noticed that he had a couple of friends with him. I also realized that I was thinking that he would need my help calling for help when I suddenly realized that everyone (but me) has a cell phone on them and would not need me to watch out in case he went in the water.

All of sudden, up at the other end of the lake, more men were coming onto the lake to ice fish. They even had kids out there playing ice hockey. They were successful and stayed for quite a while but my neighbor realized that the lake in front of his home was not thick enough to be ice fishing so he left. He is not a year-rounder as we call them; he is a summer person and weekender as he has another home to go to. Since he has not been here to watch the lake freeze and then thaw, he is not as familiar with where the lake freezes first. Since it is a fresh spring lake, the water is always moving and fresh.

Wednesday I noticed something in the melted part of the lake. I got out my binoculars and watched as a small Merganser seems to struggle with something around his head or so it appeared. The duck did not go in the water at all which is unusual as that is where they get their food. And…he was all alone, no flock or others around him. I was concerned but there was no way to help him as I could not go out on the lake and no one else would either. I said a prayer for him and checked him a few more times. Yesterday, I noticed Oscar, the sea gull sitting on the ice and watching the merganser but the little duck was still not going under the water for food. I prayed a little stronger this time that this beautiful duck would be spared. This morning I got up and although Oscar was not in sight, the merganser was. With his beautiful white hood in view, he was going in and out of the water. He was acting normal and must have been very hungry. I was relieved and now know he will be OK even if he has a tougher time catching up with his flock.

As I was in meditation afterwards, I thought of him again and was given the message that he, the hooded merganser, was giving me a message. Here he was all alone like me. His surroundings were far from the norm, as the lake was three quarters ice so he only had a small part that was liquid (which happens to be right in front of my home). Going by future conditions of the lake, it would soon be frozen over thus his food supply would be nonexistent and he was still alone. He did not go into fear; he just went along knowing that he was protected even when it did not appear so. What an example he is for me. He is one of my role models. Let nature be inspiring for you, Mother Nature is everywhere.

Our weather is reflecting all the turmoil and confusion that our world is in. Where I live, we missed the deep snowfall but our storm was erratic. First we had snow about 2 inches, then we had rain which was heavy at times but it did not melt the snow on my driveway: just on the street where the cars were helping a great deal to melt the snow. I went out and shoveled while it was still raining as I feared ice more than snow and I could just imagine if that thickness of snow and water froze, it would take a lot of sun to melt it. There, I clapped my hands, the storm was done. Unaware of it because it was dark by now, the snow came back with thick heavy flakes and was sitting on top of the water so out again I went with the shovel. I need to admit that I could push whatever was accumulating on my driveway because it would have been too heavy to lift. Even my sup pump was working at taking the water away, there was that much.

I had not planned to do the driveway either time I went out. I was more concerned with my sidewalk and a path to my garage. At least if I could walk to the garage so I could drive away, that would be a plus. Since it was still snowing after I shoveled, I assumed my snow people would finish it up. I got up this morning and there were just a coating of snow on the ice. It must have stopped snowing right after I came in the house. The boys that do my driveway must have been very confused as I saw where the truck had come down my street, saw that it was done and turned around. I called them and left a message because I know they would be confused as to who had done my driveway.

This is a perfect reflection of who YOU are, who YOU are becoming and who YOU will be.

I know we are celebrating New Year’s now but this is a story that has to be told for next Christmas. This was a problem for me when I had to admit there was no “Santa”. Read how this family solved this and how much fun their kids had. Let’s start a new tradition.
