WHO WAS OUR FIRST PRESIDENT & A SIMPLE CURE FOR BED BUG INFESTATION

It is a beautiful sunny day after many days of rain and
feeling the raw cold.  I had fully planned to start putting
away my chairs from my deck, the wooden sidewalk I
use so I can go barefoot, statues, and all the things I
bring out in the Spring to accentuate my yard.
I went to get the chairs to put them away and then
decided to sit in one in the sun for just a moment……it
turned into more than a moment.  I was in bliss, nice and warm
and feeling like it was Spring again.
Despite my plans, my mood was more nostalgic.  I was
a little sad to see the leaves fall and yet the beauty of the
wind tossing them around, uplifted me.  Since we had so
much rain, (and I was sitting outside in the chair) I could
hear the expensive system I had had installed this
spring to keep water out of my crawl space was working
good.  I had been wondering if it was working as our
summer had been so dry after it was installed.
My mind turned to Columbus Day and what a great nation
we have.  So many people have gone before us to prepare
the way so that we have our Independence.   Yet, all these
bashing political commercials have really been a downer.
My heart hurts when I hear humans degrading another human.
We are of the same species with the same needs and yet we
delight when another one of us “falls”.
This week, news broke that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,
one of the biggest sources of corporate cash backing
Republicans this year–has been using money from foreign
corporations in India, Bahrain, and elsewhere to fund its attack
ads, in apparent violation of the law.
The Chamber claims that it has internal systems to keep the money
separate, but the new report shows that the foreign corporations
donate directly to the Chamber’s general fund, which is where the
funding for their political attacks comes from. This would represent
a shocking disregard for longstanding American campaign finance laws,
all to advance a corporate, right-wing agenda of outsourcing jobs
and giving huge tax breaks to multi-national corporations.
The Chamber is spending more than any other group to back                                                      right-wing Republicans  and attack progressives in the election.

This saddens me so.  Our country is supposed to be run for the people and by the people of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.  Where are we????  Why can’t the politicians just state what they intend to do for this country and let us, the people, decide what and                             who we want.  I, for one, do not intend to vote for ANYONE who                                             subscribes to bashing their opponent regardless of what office                                                     they are running for.
I think this article is such an eye opener that it will give us a                                                         reality check and also instill pride back into our citizenship of                                                       this great country.
Who was our first President?I’m sure that George Washington was your best guess.

After all, no one else comes to mind. But think back to your history books – The United States

Declared its independence in 1776, yet Washington did not
take Office until April 30, 1789. So who was running the
country during these initial years of this young country?
It was the first eight U. S.. Presidents.  In fact, the
first President of the United States was one John Hanson.
I can hear you now – John who? John Hanson, the first
President of the United States. Don’t go checking the
encyclopedia for this guy’s name – he is
one of those great men that are lost to history.
If you’re extremely lucky, you may actually find a
brief mention of his name. The new country was actually formed on March 1, 1781

with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation.
This document was actually proposed on June 11, 1776,
but not agreed upon by Congress until November 15, 1777.Maryland refused to sign this document until Virginia

and New York ceded their western lands (Maryland
was afraid that these states would gain too much
power in the new government from such large
amounts of land).Once the signing took place in 1781, a President was

needed to run the country.  John Hanson was chosen
unanimously by Congress (which included George
Washington).  In fact, all the other potential candidates
refused to run against him, as he was a major player
in the revolution and an extremely influential member
of Congress. As the first President, Hanson had quite the shoes

to fill. No one had ever been President and the role
was poorly defined.  His actions in office would set
precedent for all future Presidents.  He took office
just as the Revolutionary War ended.  Almost
immediately, the troops demanded to be paid.
As would be expected after any long war, there
were no funds to meet the salaries.  As a result,
the soldiers threatened to overthrow the new
government and put Washington on the throne
as a monarch. All the members of Congress ran for their lives,

leaving Hanson as the only guy left running the
government.  He somehow managed to calm the
troops down and hold the country together.
If he had failed, the government would have
fallen almost immediately and everyone would have
been bowing to King Washington.
Hanson, as President, ordered all foreign troops

off American soil, as well as the removal of all
foreign flags This was quite the feat, considering
the fact that so many European countries had a
stake in the United States since the days
following Columbus.Hanson established the Great Seal of the

United States, which all Presidents have since
been required to use on all official documents.President Hanson also established the first

Treasury Department, the first Secretary of
War, and the first Foreign Affairs Department.Lastly, he declared that the fourth Thursday

of every November was to be Thanksgiving Day,
which is still true today. The Articles of Confederation only allowed a

President to serve a one year term during any
three year period, so Hanson actually accomplished
quite a bit in such little time.
Seven other presidents were elected after him:
1. Elias Boudinot (1782-83),

2. Thomas Mifflin (1783-84),

3. Richard Henry Lee (1784-85),

4. John Hancock (1785-86),

5. Nathan Gorman (1786-87),

6. Arthur St. Clair (1787-88), and

7. Cyrus Griffin (1788-89), ….all prior to

Washington taking office. So what happened?  Why don’t we hear about

the first eight presidents? It’s quite simple – The Articles of Confederation

didn’t work well.  The individual states had too much
power and nothing could be agreed upon.
A new doctrine needed to be written –
something we know as the Constitution.
And that leads us to the end of our story.George Washington was definitely not the

first President of the United States.  He was
the first President of the United States under the
Constitution we follow today.
And the first eight Presidents are forgotten in history.

YOU HAVE TO BE A LOVER OF HISTORY TO

APPRECIATE THIS!!It took EIGHT years for us to establish a successful

government.  You might just remember this when you
hear that so little progress has been made establishing
a Government in Iraq. There you are – another lesson in U.S. History,

and you may have learned something new today.
On a lighter note, this is simple TO DO.

Subject:
Bed Bug Epidemic – true
Hi All: A bit of information that you might like to know about.
We have friends here in our community and one of their sons is an
entomologist (insect expert), and has been telling them that there is
an epidemic of bed bugs now occurring in America. Recently I have
heard on the news that several stores in NYC have had to close due

to bed bug problems, as well as a complete mall in New Jersey. He says that since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. now comes
from companies outside of America, (sad but true), even the most
expensive stores sell foreign clothing from China, Indonesia, etc.
The bed bugs are coming in on the clothing as these countries do not
consider them a problem.

He recommends that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and
socks, sheets, towels, etc. that you bring  them into the house and put
them in your clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill
them and their eggs.
DO NOT PURCHASE CLOTHES AND HANG THEM IN THE CLOSET FIRST.
It does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit
comes from the most expensive store known in the U.S. They still get
shipments from these countries and the bugs can come in a box of
scarves or anything else for that matter. That is the reason why so
many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut down
in NYC and other places.

All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or eggs and
you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them. He travels
all over the country as an advisor to many of these stores, as prevention
and after they have the problem.
Send this information on to those on your e-mail list so that this good
prevention information gets around quickly.

HAVE A HAPPY, FREE AND WONDERFUL COLUMBUS DAY!

HOW MANY HATS DO YOU WEAR?

It has been a very unusual week and I believe the weather
has had much to do with it. It kind of sets the tone for all
of our interactions.

What we had the most of this winter was wind – creating high
drifts although there was not much snow. The force of the wind
brought all the snow together in certain spots while other spots
were bare. The beach was all sand and yet I had drifts of snow
higher than the railing on my deck.

We had an early spring with wonderful weather, even though the
temperatures were erratic. I don’t mind getting May weather in
March, do you? Well right now, the last day of April, we are
having March weather. The winds have been blowing so much
that we even had gusts of 50 miles an hour yesterday.

I find watching the weather so fascinating although I do have a
preference for warm summer days when I can go kayaking and
then take a dip in the lake. I kayaked at the end of March but
cannot kayak now because the wind is so ferocious although it
is beautiful to watch the trees dance, especially now that they
have their dresses of flowers on and these flowers are dancing
all around.

The wind also helped me make up my mind whether to continue
with my idea of putting spinwheels ( I always called them pinwheels
but they are not held together with pins anymore) to try and persuade
the Canadian geese not to come on our beach. A beach that belongs
to a private beach club is right in front of my home so I have the joy
of watching the water and all its animals right from my bow
window.

Geese are beautiful and it is a joy to watch them serenely wafting
on the water. Yet….the downside is that they come onto the beach
and leave their calling cards which people and children step in.

Last year we tried a decoy of a coyote which worked until someone
stole it and we were back to square one. I had used spinwheels
placed under my wood fence to deter them from coming onto my
grass for food last year and they worked well. So this year I
decided to try them across the beach front which is considerably
larger than the area I was doing for my yard. I purchased the
spinwheels three separate times because I would run short and
the geese discovered that there was space in between them
where they could come through without hurting themselves.

Yesterday, I came home from yoga to discover flying spinwheels
all over. The wind was so ferocious that the water had white caps
and the waves even buried some of them in the mud at the water’s edge.
If you could have seen me trying to play catch with the wind, you
would have smiled. I laughed at myself as I ran around trying to
catch them. I pulled them all back up and put them away for
safe keeping. Today, I made the decision to surrender my
resistance (what you resists, persists) and pray that someone
else can come up with a better idea.

Do you have a better idea to discourage the geese?I would
love to hear it.

While I was playing this game with the geese, I realized that by
putting up a barrier to keep them away, I was also keeping other
wildlife away. I love to watch the ducks when they come to the
edge to preen and I delight in watching the slow easy stride
of the Great Blue Heron looking for fish and also the little
birds that feed around the edge. All that joy and beauty
had come to a standstill because I had put up barriers and
was trying to fight against the natural flow of Mother Nature.

When I received this link to the photos on the Year in the
Life of our President, I could not help but compare what I was doing
and what the president is doing. He is trying to protect the US and
at the same time, keep our democracy and freedom intact to enjoy
what life offers to each of us.

I am so grateful that the decisions I make do not affect others except
that I was trying to ease their burden of raking up the poop everytime
they come to enjoy the beach and the possibility that it could be shut
down because of contamination. The enormity of what the President
has on his shoulders really came to life for me.

He is not only the President but a husband and father who wants to
make the world a better place for everyone’s children. It takes a
special person to be able to juggle all the demands on his time and
still be able to smile and play with his children and have time with
his wife and yet remain balanced in his Spirit to make those
decisions that affect each and every one of us.

Every parent knows the demands on their time made by their
children, could you handle the awesome responsibility of
the country and your family? I need to admit that I could
not and I am amazed at how President Obama does this with such Grace.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of his first year and the insight
you will get from watching him wear all the hats he has.

We are the WORLD!

We are the WORLD! Everyone of us feels separate or alone
too many times. Why does it take a death of a loved one for us
to wake up and realize that there are many fellow sojourners on
Earth just like us, going through so many of the same feelings?

All we need do is reach out and someone will take our hand.
Usually, it is someone you never expected or even someone
you did not know before.

I apologize for being late with this newsletter, you have never
left my mind as I thought of you and joined with you in the mourning
of Michael Jackson. He is free from all pain now even as we are left
in pain at his departure from this physical domain.

Let us appreciate all he has shared with us, it was his mission and
he did it well.

I so wanted to share with you some of what he left for us to hear
perhaps with a more vulnerable heart now. We take for granted
what is with us until it is no longer in the physical.

This is a link to hear and see a video of WE ARE THE WORLD.
Let it flow into your heart and join your loving energy with all
the others who are sharing with you. This is also a link to 60
of his videos if you would like to hear more of his music.
